Our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Mikesell, was honored at the school picnic with an original song written by the 1st and 2nd grade students. Check out the lyrics of the “Blue Kangaroo!”
THE BLUE KANGAROO
lyrics by Holmes School 1st and 2nd Grade
Dedicated in June, 2010 to our wonderful librarian – Mrs. Mikesell
Oh I’m a blue kangaroo. All my books are gone.
What should I do? Where did I go wrong?
Oh I’m a blue kangaroo and its library day. What will Mrs. Mikesell say?
Oooo - I’m a blue kangaroo. ( 4 times )
Oh well she looked at me and then she said,
“Better go back home and check under your bed!
The Library Dragon comes out in May, and YOU will have to pay!”
Oooo – Overdue! ( 4 times )
I tried to think back and retrace my steps.
The books were in my pouch. But what happened next?
I was jumping with koala and my brother too. What am I gonna do?
Maybe – the books bounced out. ( 4 times )
Weeks had passed and still no books.
Mrs. Mikesell’s going to call me a crook!
Then koala came over to play one day. This is what he had to say:
“Hey —– I found your books today!” (4 times )
So I returned my books. I’m not feeling sad.
Mrs. Mikesell did not even seem mad!
All my troubles are gone. I’m not singin’ the blues. I hope this never happens to you!
Ooo – I don’t have to sing the blues! (3 times)

The 3rd grade classes were treated to an amazing concert by Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra musician, Bill Vits. We learned about percussion instruments from around the world, beat, and rhythm while listening and moving to lots of music. We even heard an instrument that was originally invented to be a burglar alarm! It is called a teremin.
