Where in the World

Where in the World? October 2009

10.06.2009

Clue #1:One style of music from this country is samba. In samba music you can hear two bass drums playing a steady beat pattern of higher pitch-lower pitch-higher pitch-lower pitch. This is like counting 1-2-1-2. Listen to a sample of samba music by clicking the play button.
Clue #2: Bossa Nova is another style of music from this country. The name “bossa nova” is Portugese for “new beat.” Where in the world do people speak Portugese?
Clue #3: Our mystery country is the largest country in South America. It is also home to the Amazon River. The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held in this country.
Clue #4: Capoeria is an art form from this country. Martial arts movement is combined with music in capoeria. The berimbau is played. This instrument looks like a bow used in hunting and has a shaker called a caxixi.

How to play "Where in the World"

Each month, students in grades 1-4 will "travel" to an exciting new destination by playing "Where in the World." How does this work? Well, think of Matt Lauer on the Today Show, but with musical clues! Students will be given written, musical, and picture clues in music class to help guess the location of "Where in the World." The written clues, a sound sample, and image will also be featured on the website.

Students can guess by placing their written entry, including their name and the name of the country they are guessing, in the prize drawing box in the music room at school. Several winners will be drawn at the end of each month. This is similar to "Mystery Composer" from last year!

Parents, feel free to help your child play along. It is fun for adults, too! Enjoy the discovery of new music and cultures as you play "Where in the World." Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.
